Christmas Town USA Overview and History

Christmas Town USA Overview and History

Overview

  • As Christmas draws near each year, the quiet little town of McAdenville, lying along the South Fork River in Gaston County, NC, comes alive in spectacular fashion. Seemingly overnight, this little town is transformed into "Christmas Town, USA."

During December, hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights turn this small town into a spectacular holiday display. Visitors stroll down Main Street or drive through town surrounded by the sights and sounds of Christmas.

More than 375 illuminated Christmas trees
More than 200 wreaths adorn town lampposts
Santa and reindeer display (9 feet tall by 70 feet long)
Chrono-chime bells play Christmas carols at the William J. Pharr Family YMCA
Adam Springs Memorial and a two-sided post clock on Main Street dedicated in honor of The Reverend Billy R. Miller

Welcoming approximately 600,000 visitors, McAdenville and Pharr Yarns are dedicated to continuing the Christmas Town tradition for years to come.

The Lake

  • One of the favorite spots for viewers is the lake situated near the heart of town. More than 30 trees, ranging in size from 12 to 40 feet, ring the lake. The reflection of the lights in the water adds to the beauty of the scene. A central fountain jets water 75 feet into the air, while lights shine in a sequence of red, green, blue and amber. Also at the lake is a 46 foot wide lighted image of Old Man Winter blowing snowflakes into the air.

The Bell Tower

  • Adjacent to the lake is the historic bell tower that has served as a central focal point for the Town of McAdenville since the establishment of McAden Mills in the early 1880's. In 2010, this historic bell tower was fully restored to its former prominence. In addition to the restoration, a new chime system was installed to renew the original tradition of the bell tower peeling time for the residents and workers in the village. The new chimes welcome visitors with carols, special hymns, and songs to mark each holiday season. They also play on national holidays and during special remembrances including a yearly tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Preparation

  • While much emphasis has been placed on the lighting of trees, this represents only a portion of the effort that goes into the preparation for Christmas. The town residents play a big part as they decorate their homes in original styles according to their own personal feelings. This gives a special expression of "Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas" from townspeople to their visitors. A life-size nativity scene and life-size figures of carolers, complete with music, add to the effect.

In early August, Tim Gibson and his team begin checking bulbs, wiring and circuits. By September the stringing of lights begins and is not completed until a day or two before the lights are turned on.

Historical Timeline

  • 1956: The McAdenville Men's Club decides to decorate a few trees around the Community Center. With the permission of town officials and Mr. W. J. Pharr, President of Pharr Yarns, nine trees were decorated. It was Mrs. Pharr who suggested the use of specific Christmas colors and later also suggested the addition of the manger scene.

1973 - 74: Marks the only years when the lights did not dazzle and delight the eyes and hearts of local citizens and millions of visitors. This was due to our country's energy crisis.

1980: Charles Kuralt placed Christmas Town USA on the map featuring it on the nationwide televised "Morning Show."

1997: Christmas Town shared holiday greetings with the nation by way of "Good Morning America."

2003: International coverage from ARD, a TV network in Germany, to 5 million viewers.

2006: An Austrian Newspaper, "Osterreich," features Christmas Town.

2007: TFI, a French Television Network, reported on a day-in-the-life of an American family living in Christmas Town USA to 10 million viewers.

This year, the 59th annual Christmas Light Celebration honors the memory of Mr. J. M. "Bip" Carstarphen who passed away in May of this year. Bip served as Pharr Yarns' CEO and was the beloved husband of Mrs. Catherine Ann Pharr Carstarphen. A stately Christmas tree to the left of the Pharr Family YMCA will serve as a memorial to "Bip's" memory and his many contributions to Pharr Yarns and the Town of McAdenville.

"This town attracts a special kind of people who haven't lost sight of what it is to be a neighbor. We are a community of honest, hard working people willing to help one another out and look out for one another. I saw this when I delivered papers as a young boy and I still see it today. If someone needs help, you get a lending hand. If someone gets sick, food comes to you every night until you are well again."
